Our group was a senior class from Rapid City Christian School in Rapid City, South Dakota. For some of them, this was their first time out of the state. Initially, some were nervous because it was their first time in an urban environment. Soon, their concerns would vanish as we were welcomed with smiles and open arms from the New Life Pilsen church community we were there to serve with.
The Safe Haven After-School program in particular was a favorite for most if not all of the participants. The students arrive when the school day ends to work on homework and receive tutoring if needed, have a snack, play computer games and have fun outside if the weather allows.
The community is home to Mexican, African-American, Czech and Italian families. The video provides more information on the Safe Haven program and the work New Life Pilsen is doing in the community.
